Here's a description of this year's ANN pre-conference session:

Experiencing Harmony and Beauty in Mathematical Patterns

Beauty, joy, creativity - Are these things present in your math classes? Could they be? ANN invites you to channel your inner artist and explore relationships between mathematics, music, and art. Come learn how the arts can deepen students’ understanding of essential math concepts and help them tune-in to the math in the world around them. No music or art skills are needed to enjoy this fun-filled day of learning and growing as math practitioners.

Participants at the Institute will:

• Explore how art and music can be powerful real-world and culturally significant modalities for a variety of mathematical content, regardless of a student’s math ability.
• Investigate asymmetry and irregularity—disruptions of patterns.
• Focus on how adult learners can enter into mathematics via art and music with real-life activities.
• Receive a one-year ANN membership with the price of registration (new or renewal). (Annual membership is usually $20)
• Leave with classroom-ready activities that they can immediately use with students at all ability levels.
