Math for Identity and Belonging: Measuring a Meaningful Place
One way to advance equity in the math classroom is to center student voice and student experience. Inspired by the movement to rehumanize mathematics, over this six-week program we will work toward and then reflect on a place-based math activity called Measuring a Meaningful Place. We will experience this task together as learners and then consider ways to cultivate healthy identity and belonging with students in our own teaching contexts, whether in person or at a distance.
All meetings are at 4pm PT/ 5pm MT/ 6pm CT/ 7pm ET
Plan for each meeting to last 1 ½ hours. Though it may vary week to week, plan for one hour of preparation before each meeting.

Objectives: Through participation in this 6-week program, participants will…
1. Experience the value of identity and belonging in a learning environment.
2. Complete a place-based math activity.
3. Adapt a place-based math activity for their own teaching contexts.
4. Learn about related research and resources.
Audience: The intended audience is educators in the field of adult education, especially those teaching at the pre-college level or lower; those in related fields are welcome.
How to attend: All meetings will be on Zoom and will not be recorded. Participants will receive the link after registering. Over the six weeks, please plan to miss no more than one session. Attendance is required for week 3.
Cost: There is no cost to participate. Membership in the Adult Numeracy Network is encouraged! It is the donation that gives back.
Continuing education hours: A certificate for fifteen continuing education hours will be awarded upon completion of the 6-week program. (1.5 hour meetings x 6) + (1 hour prep x 6) = 15 hours
