Iddo Gal: What every (numeracy) educator working with (young) adults should know about Civic Statistics, and why

The third virtual seminar is offered and hosted by Adults Learning Mathematics (ALM) in association with the International Association for Statistical Education (IASE).

This seminar focuses on understanding ‘Civic Statistics’ which pertain to ‘hot’ domains such as health, crime, poverty, employment, income, (in)equality, environment, and other societal topics. Civic Statistics are of critical importance to societies and take central role in the news and in political life, yet many educators working in adult education (or in schools or colleges) are unfamiliar with their nuances and educational promise for developing statistical literacy and numeracy. We will illustrate the unique features of Civic Statistics, and discuss resulting implications for teaching practices and for promoting critical interpretation, and resulting research frontiers.
