The presentation addresses two critical questions. First, What are Black learners' conceptions of smartness? Second, What participation patterns exist between and among Black learners' conceptions of smartness? Findings from the study show conceptions of smartness that reinforce and disrupt dominant narratives and highlight Black learners' nuance and complexity of smartness. Additionally, using the Equity Quantified In Participation (EQUIP) observation tool, highlights the patterns of participation in relation to Black learners' conceptions of smartness.
