Patricia Helmuth is an ABE teacher and professional developer in the Hudson Valley, NY. She is also the editor of the Adult Numeracy Network's newsletter, the Math Practitioner.
In this talk, she shares her vision of what high expectations can look like in the ABE math classroom. Adult basic education classes are often one-room schoolhouses, and Patricia's is no exception. Patricia wanted to learn how to give individualized instruction in a mixed-level class while at the same time providing all her students with equal access to the same high-level math tasks. This is her story.
Patricia's Call to Action:
- Provide equal access to high-cognitive demand tasks for students at all levels
- Try something new: Push & Support cards or MathMemos
- Analyze how this impacts students' learning and performance
